Hands on experiences for schools!
We have had a great time welcoming over 2000 pupils from Primary and Secondary Schools to come and see Carlisle’s Roman Bathhouse.
We won’t be returning to the site again until 2025, but have been visiting schools with to talk about the site and bring the handling collections. Submit a schools enquiry form for bookings, and one of the team will be in touch to discuss.
In the mean time if you have any questions about the site or what’s been found please feel free to get in touch.
We have provided sessions for both primary and secondary aged pupils, Youth Clubs, Young Archaeologists Club, and Guiding and Scouts groups.
We will adapt to the needs of every group, but as a general guideline to provide the best experience we normally accommodate one class at a time.
A typical Primary school visit to site takes around an hour including;
5 to 10 minutes – Arrive, introductions and site welcome.
Introduction to the Romans more broadly and who they were. Divide into two groups to swap after each session.
20 minutes – Tour of the site, to see archaeology in action and what is being discovered.
20 minutes – Object handling of newly discovered site finds and replica Roman objects.
5 to 10 minutes - Review learning. Roman soldier drill, class photo and wrap up.
